On October 8, 2016, the Bronx Library Center will be joining libraries across North America in the Inaugural Indie Author Day—an event designed to bring the local writing community together.

Calling all book lovers, literary enthusiasts, the curious and those just looking for a fun and free event.

Did you know that out of 180,000 public domain images, over 2,000 are from the Bronx? This post will highlight some the treasures from this incredible gold mine of historic images that are now free to use.

At the Bronx Library Center we frequently receive calls from all over the country from folks who had their origins in the Bronx and are looking to research their family history, find a news article, an obituary, a high school yearbook or general historical information about the Bronx. Listed here are online resources where you can find information to answer these questions.

Now in its third year, the Bronx Book Fair (formerly the Bronx Literary Festival) will be held on Saturday, May 30 from 12-6 p.m. at the Bronx Library Center.It promises to be a great day for book lovers, literacy enthusiasts, creative writers, and the curious of all ages.

The Bronx Library Center is one of several libraries hosting an initiative to develop reading and discussion programs for veterans, as well as their families, friends, service providers, and caregivers.

Last Saturday, August 23, we concluded our Adult Summer Reading Challenge 2014. Winners were announced and prizes awarded. Each participant had to submit logs of the books they read over the summer with a brief review of each title.

Why should adults sign up for Summer Reading?

One of the unique features of the Bronx is that is has a week dedicated to showcasing and celebrating all its wonderful attributes: history, literature, culture, etc. Here is a reading list which is sure to spark your interests in all things Bronx!

My romanticized view of history was crushed in college when my history professor explained that historians in writing history sometimes create fictional narratives around the facts to make it coherent and more interesting to read. I much prefer reading that George Washington cut down the cherry tree or that Nero fiddled while Rome burned.

Each year multiple literary prizes are awarded to recognize the works of great writers. Some of these awards are well known and much anticipated like the prestigious Nobel Prize for Literature, while others are lesser known. Here is a list of some of the more popular literary awards given out this year.

The Nobel Prize for Literature was established in 1901 at the bequest of Alfred Nobel (Swedish chemist, engineer, innovator and inventor of dynamite). It is awarded by the Swedish Academy in

It was then I noticed it, on the side of the bus, a poster size picture of the building with the caption "A library as beautiful as the Bronx." I looked in astonishment, then with pride and joy as I recognised the building—it was where I was headed!

This year the Bronx will be celebrating its 41st Annual Bronx Week. What is unique about Bronx Week? It's a 10 day (May 9-19) celebration showcasing the best the Bronx has to offer.

At the Bronx Library Center (the central library of the Bronx and NYC's premier green building) a Bronx-centric week awaits—featuring some of the top talents and events of the Bronx.

You can say it started in 1678 with the publication of John Bunyan's Pilgrim Progress. Then along came Hall Caine's The Christian (1897) and C.S Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia in the 1950s. Fast forward to the 21st century, major news magazines such as Time were talking about the Left Behind series.
