Every so often I like to give myself a D.E.A.R. Day. I find it to be a great de-stressor. So, you want to know what exactly I do on a D.E.A.R. Day. First, I make sure I have the day off from work. Then, I check out a few good books from the library. On the morning of my D.E.A.R. Day, I wake up, have breakfast, then get straight to it. I Drop Everything And Read on the sofa or in bed all day long. I do nothing else, no cooking, cleaning, shopping, hanging out with friends or family, just nothing but read! As soon as I finish one book, I take up another. I find this exercise to be very relaxing and a true vacation for the mind.

At the Bronx Library Center we decided to have a Drop Everything And Read Day for everyone—maybe you can't do this at home—your spouse or parent might not allow it! Your roommate might be too noisy. So come over to the Bronx Library Center on Friday, October 17 and give yourself a D.E.A.R. Day. You deserve it!

To give you some encouragement here is what we have planned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

You are also invited to read from a select list of titles provided. Just come to the auditorium, select your books from the set provided and add your name to the readers' list. When it's your turn, your name will be called and you'll have an opportunity to read to the audience. If you don't feel like reading to anyone, you can sit back in a nice cushioned seat and have others read to you.

10:30 a.m. - Meet Lucie Whitehouse of Before We Met, 2014.

Adults are invited to read from the list of titles below . Copies will be available.

Reference Librarian Candice John will read from The Works of Edgar Allan Poe.

 "Austin Voronkov is many things.  He is an engineer, an inventor, and, in 1913, an immigrant from Russia to Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he gets a job at a rifle factory.  At the house where he rents a room, he falls in love with a woman named Julia, who becomes his wife and mother of his three children.  When Austin is wrongly accused of attending anarchist gatherings, his limited grasp of English condemns him to his fate as a deportee and forces him to retreat with his new bride to his home in Russia.  There, he and his young family become embroiled in the civil war and must flee once again, this time to Mexico.

While Julia and the children are eventually able to return to the United States, Austin becomes indefinitely stranded in Mexico City because of the black mark on his record …"
