How Many Librarians Does It Take to Find a Forgotten Book?

Update: Read the wrap up of the 2019 edition NYPL Title Quest

In Search of the Forgotten Title

What do you get when you have 20 librarians in a room, furiously searching for answers?

NYPL Title Quest 2018.

librarians typing
Title questing!

It all started back in 2012, with an innocent blog post: "I Remember It Had a Blue Cover and... Finding Books by Their Plot Lines." Initially intended to help readers find tools so they could search more effectively for their own answers—every librarian's fondest dream—the post quickly morphed into a place where readers left comments, hoping that their descriptions would ring a bell for someone.

We updated the post in 2017, refreshing the resources and retitling it, "Finding a Book When You've Forgotten Its Title." It's become one of our most popular posts, and it has hundreds upon hundreds of comments—which keep coming in, far more quickly than our library staff or the wisdom of the crowd can keep up with.

So, in the dog days of summer 2018, a few dozen NYPL staff members huddled in a basement classroom and at branches around the city, and spent two hours searching intensely for the books these commenters were seeking.

(It should be noted, this is hard.  These aren't your standard readers' advisory questions; these are very brief outlines of half-remembered plots and characters, often with very little information to go on. It's some upper-level investigative work, right here.)

In two hours, we made educated guesses for 48 (forty-eight!) different comments. Here's a sample of a few we think we figured out:

  • A children's book from the 1980s about a favorite aunt who hosts a sleepover for her nieces and nephews? We think it's Aunt Nina Goodnight by Franz Bradenberg, art by Aliki.
  • A book by an Italian author about perception and reality? We think it's One, No One, and One Hundred Thousand by Luigi Pirandello.
  • A thriller about an Australian naval patrol boat during World War II? We think the author is J.E. Macdonnell and the title might be Fire Storm.
  • A novel with a horse named Ophelia? Our guess is Unbroken by Jessie Haas.
  • A YA book with a girl and a pegasus on the cover? We think it's the Pegasus series by Kate O'Hearn.
  • Another YA novel about a school with a dangerous contest? Our guess is Panic by Lauren Oliver.

Help me find this book please :)

I read a book in elementary school (btw 1990-1995) and all I can remember was the main character going to a far off island that was full of pink lizards. The Lizards may have been speaking characters, the size of humans. We read it as part of an advanced placement class so it may have been for a higher reading level than whatever grade I was in. I was probably in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade. Any ideas???

Lizard Music, by Daniel

Lizard Music, by Daniel Pinkwater? (originally published under the byline of D. Manus Pinkwater)?

Maybe I have done this right.

Maybe I have done this right. I am trying to remember the title of a book I read in jr high (around 1989) that depicts a brother and sister who are, I believe either on summer break or winter/Christmas break but become terribly bored and begin to rome and wind up at a tree out front of their house which has a hole at the base to which they discover they are able to poke a finger in and from there the hole expands and allows their whole bodies to enter into the trunk of the tree into another place to which they find a new adventure. I hope this helps. This is about all I remember. Thanks!

The Wishing Tree? I started

The Wishing Tree? I started reading a book that sounded like this when I was in year 4 or so and i think it might be part of the wishing chair collection, but i can't remember.

Please help me find this book

Hello, I have been looking for this book for years but have had no luck. It was read to me in public school in the early-mid 90s and is an illustrated book that uses what I recall is a style of oil paints for lush and full cover. The book is a larger size to accommodate the illustrations, which can take up a small section to a whole page as the story progresses. The story is an adventure/fantasy book about two races, a giant race and a small, almost bug size race. One day, a curse hits the land, cast by a dark sorcerer, causing people to freeze/disappear. A member of the small race joins forces with a member of the giant race (who is looking for his parents) to journey to the dark creature's lair and break the curse, which can only be done by solving his riddle. Any help to find more information on this book would be very much appreciated.

Forgotten picture book of my childhood

There was a book about rabbits who go about painting the forrest and meadows to make it more beautiful. And there's one very old grandfather rabbit who is the best painter. And when he promises to do something special when he "dies" and at the end, he paints a spectacular sunset. Do you know the title or author or any other details?

The builder's family buys the house when wealthy family moves. Novel covers the the son and his family as they live in the house. I need to find this book

I am looking for a book that has a yellow cover with three words on the front cover that appear to have been cut out of different magazines and such. It is fiction, in a middle school library. I am pretty sure it involves a girl who must help her mute brother tell what he knows about a crime. The crime could have been abuse but I can't remember. I thought it had the word cracks in it but it is not stepping on the cracks. The author's last name has to to begin with A-C based on where it was in the library before it was changed around.

Please help find this book.

The book I'm looking for is about a former Magician's apprentice names Maria. After she is kicked out of the Magicians circle she finds a mute boy being taken care of by another former Magician. A war starts between Maria and a neighboring country. Maria and the mute boy go on a quest to find the lost magic of the kingdom. Along the way they find a two tailed cat who can talk thru magic. It's a young adult novel published in the 1990's

Help! Need title of short-story!

When I was in the 11th grade, I read a short story about a girl who goes camping with her boyfriend and she thinks they are going to get engaged but they are interrupted by a bear who attacks the girl. Through the story, the girl is trying to figure out if her boyfriend who ran away while she was being attacked was running to get help or running to escape.

Need help finding book I read 5 years ago

This book is about a girl, after her father loses wealth the family must go to another place to live. I remember they had to go across the sea the trip was very dangerous and the girl got sick but then she got better but her cabin mate was not as fortunate and the cabin mate died. When the girl finally got there I believe they had to live among the native people that lived there before. She met this man a little older than her she slowly falls in love with him and he slowly falls in love with her but I remember in the beginning he scolded her for not being able to do certain tasks that she wasn't used to it cause she was from a life of riches. One very important thing to note about the book is that there's a beached whale and the people are very happy because the beached whale means a lot of food. I remember there was a second book as well where her story continues.

I need help finding a children’s chapter book

Hi! I would really love to find this book i remember reading it about 8 years ago. I remember it was about this girl and she had fiery red hair and big eyes on the cover. the front cover had very vibrant colors and really animated. I think her name might have had something to do with her red hair. I also remember reading this one book where it was christmas and it was all about her preparing for christmas.

Please help me fine this book

I previously read it in 2017 or 18. It was about a young woman who is pregnant with her sister baby who was murdered. She was told to find her old boyfriend if something happened to her sister. Her old boyfriend happened to be the sperm donor for the baby but neither knew about the other. The dead sister was a jewel thief but her husband always returned the jewelry. Now the couple are being hunted. Could you help me find this book? Thanks
This book is about a boy who had no ability to feel sorrow or sorry due to what he passed through as a child. His mother killed herself right in front of him when he was little but he didn't feel sorrow. He later got a girlfriend when he was in school who could sing, she sang “like I'm gonna lose you” to him one of the days and he cried for the first time in a long time. Please help me find the title of this book, this is virtually all I remember. I think the boy's name is Blake. Thanks in advance.

Trying to find a book from the 80s or 90s

Hi, I’m looking for a book I read In the 80s or 90s called A Girl Like Me (as far as I can remember). It was about a London girl who had three boyfriends- one was upper class, another was a burglar. It was romantic and funny and quite popular at the time. Can you help me?

Tween book set in a private school

I’ve been trying to find this book I read when I was younger. The beginning of the book starts with the main character girl’s uncle marrying her best friends mom. She goes to a private school and its spirit week, her older brother goes to public. Her one friend has a boyfriend who is leaving for the whole summer. Her one boy friend plays rugby. He crush is a year older and takes her on a date to a movie theater. Her girl enemy always throws a end of the school year party. They hide chicken robots as a school prank.

A book with dwarves who live in treehouses inside a Maelstrom

I’m looking for the title/author of a book late 80s, early 90s perhaps. All of maybe just a part of it is about a group of dwarves who used to mine, but now are living in a network of treehouses. That network is inside of a storm...a maelstrom. That’s all I know.

Teenagers in an alien science experiment that gives powers?

So, obviously there are major spoilers. I need help finding this book I read like four or five years ago. I remember that it starts out with someone taking a test to see if they are eligible for this science thing and it helps to be bilingual. Then they pass this test and stuff happens, then they get taken up into this space station or something similar (I think through a super fast tube that rockets into the sky) and there is like either five, six, or seven teenagers who passed this test thing. I remember that these scientists had these stones they found in space and when the teenagers come into contact with the stones, the stones are sucked into the kid's hand and give each of them different supernatural abilities. I know that one girl had super strength, someone had something to do with electricity, I think another had fire, maybe there was something having to do with magnetic or gravity stuff. Anyway, it had to be teenagers because adults already had fully formed brains and I think it already killed two people just under 25 that tried to combine with the stones. Flash forward a lot to after they get some type of training for their powers and learn a lot of stuff. The girl with super strength or something went bad and wanted to be more powerful I think? Well, something along those lines happened and the group got into a fight and someone sunk her into the sea or ocean, then when she reached the bottom, she immediately shoved off of the bottom and shot up to get air, forgetting about decompression sickness. That killed her, she lost her stone, and we find out that one of the other teenagers had actually planned for her to die. Eventually, the teenagers started dying one by one because the group ended up turning against each other until three were left. Two of them, a guy and a girl were dating or having sex or something, don't know, but I think that something had to do with blue before the final show down. There was an abandoned building, these two guys were fighting, the one who wasn't dating the girl died, the guy who was got the stone (extremely painful by the way) and I think either him or the girl ended up dying. Either way, one of the teenagers from the beginning got all of the stones and something happened that lit the abandoned building on fire. I have no idea if the last one dies of not, but I think that they used the stones to destroy the stones so that all of this would never happen again. That's all I remember from it. I can't even remember if it was just a book or an entire series. I also don't know if all of this is true, I made up a lot of stuff about the books I read in sixth grade, so some of this might just be from a personal plot line.

Looking for 70s book about teenagers searching for Sasquatch

Hi -- I've tried searching for this on my own but can't find anything -- lots of references to Sasquatch in general but not this particular book. This young-adult novel was written in the 70s and was featured on John Robbin's Storybound (or Book Bird). It was about some high schoolers who want to get a newspaper "scoop" by finding/photographing Sasquatch in - I think - the Oregon woods. One of the teens is Native American, and he helps the others survive when they unsurprisingly get lost and lose some of their provisions. Another teen works for the school newspaper, a third is the school athlete, etc. I'd love to find this book for my 7 year-old, who is asking many questions about Sasquatch and the Loch Ness Monster lately.

I CAN'T REMEMBER!

I haven't read this book, but I read a summary about it and it sounds really good. I think it was about the author who went back to the girls in his highschool and asked why they didn't want to date him when he was in highschool. Its a nonfiction- so it's all real people and places. I think the cover might have been read and it had some people on it I think, but I'm not sure. I remember really wanting to read this book, and then I forgot to write it down. Please help!

Looking for a book Title.

I remember reading a book in year seven (four year ago) about a girl travelling around America with this boy and the destination is the girls new college or something. They end up falling in love, there was something to do with a brother in rehab and like a yogurt store also a cabin maybe? Idk.

Looking for a book Title.

A book about a girl who is going through her dead brothers stuff and comes upon a box with a letter to this girl and a negative, she finds the girl who is living with her dad and who she introduces as her little brother but is actually the girls son who she had with the girls brother. The mother who lost her son got divorced and loved the son and not the daughter, the daughter had to look after the mum because she had become really depressed and I think possibly suicidal.

Children’s mystery

I read this book where there’s a young boy who draws cartoons and he’s aspiring to be an artist. He’s going through trauma at home due to his mum and stepdad, his family aren’t very supportive of him. Somewhere during the book he has to solve a miser mystery I’m pretty sure and he uses his art and drawing to help him. I never finished the book and would love to however I cannot remember the title! Thanks :)

HELP!

I have seriously been trying to remember the title and or author of a book that I read in high school and I cannot remember it and there are like 500 books with the same story apparently. I wish I could remember more details but sadly I graduated in 2010 and I may have read this book in 2008-2009. Anyway, it was about a girl that may have been in high school OR college, that begins sleeping with her teacher. Anddd that’s all I can remember. She goes to his house or apartment? I feel like he seduces her. Or comes on to her first. No one knows. Unless they find out at the end, I don’t remember how it ends. I just know that I really liked the book and would love to find it so that I could read it again!

Help me please

There was a story I read on the Kindle once it was like a run off of snow white there was a girl who had skin white as snow and lips red as blood she had a step brother who was mean to her and when she would tell her step mother she didnt believe her and was mean to her I remember there was a raven or a bird that was a huge symbol in the story but at the end the step mother killed her and fed her to her father if I remember
