Along with the collections and technology In the Library, the Andrew Heiskell Library offers tours, classes, and programs.

 

  • Demonstrations of equipment.
  • Community room for special programs. Programs include music performances, lectures, demonstrations of assistive technology, and readings.
  • Class visits and other activities for children and young adults. The Youth Services Librarian will be happy to arrange a visit either in the library or at a school. Contact the library to schedule a visit.
  • Agency visits. The Outreach specialist is available for onsite tours or for visits to agencies to explain the library's services. Contact the library to arrange a visit.
  • Information on and referral to other disability-related resources.
  • Fully equipped recording studio where volunteers narrate Talking Books.
  • Reading tables wired for use with audio playback equipment. 
  • WiFi for internet connections with either your own laptop or one you may borrow from the library for onsite use. 
  • Optional high-intensity lighting for readers requiring additional illumination.
  • Adaptive Technology:
    • Kurzweil Computers: Computers equipped with scanners and software that converts printed text into synthetic speech.
    • Public computers with screen enlarging software and screen readers that can be used with the Internet or Microsoft Office.
    • Public computers equipped with braille printers, braille translation software, and refreshable braille displays. 
    • Closed-circuit television magnifiers that can enlarge print letters up to 60 times their original size.
  • Computer Classes: Ongoing classes are currently being offered in English or Spanish for Basic Computer Skills, JAWS screen reader, ZoomText and MAGic screen enlarging software, and the Kurzweil computers. You must be able to type to take these classes. To learn ZoomText and MAGic, you must be able to use a computer mouse. Training is also available in the use of Web-Braille and PAWS, the library’s online catalog. Call the library at (212) 206-5400 to make an appointment.

  • Music Scores and Instruction on cassette, records, and in braille are available from the National Library Service's Music Services division.
