Consult with a Research SpecialistThe Division holds over 29,000 linear feet of archival material in over 5,500 collections. The strengths of the Division are the papers and records of individuals, families, and organizations, primarily from the New York region. These collections support research in the political, economic, social, and cultural history of New York and the United States.

archives.nypl.org searches over the over 9,000 archival and manuscript collections in the Libary's Research Centers, including those in the Manuscripts and Archives Division.
Schedule an appointment
If you expect to research archives or have a question about our holdings, please use the application form to ask a reference question, or request to view archival material. Be sure to include the name of the collection, and box numbers to research if possible.
Initial requests for material should be placed at least one week in advance of your intended visit. Any additional requests are to be submitted in the Reading Room.
Class visits
The Manuscripts and Archives Division welcomes class visits and collaboration with area colleges and universities. To schedule, or discuss class visit opportunities with an archivist, please fill out the Class Visit Application.
