Happy Birthday Mr. Lincoln
The New York Public Library celebrated the 200th birthday of the nations’ 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, with a day of events for children and families on Saturday, February 7, 2009. The celebration began with a presentation by Barry Denenberg, author of several critically-acclaimed fiction and nonfiction titles for young readers such as Lincoln Shot! and All Shook Up: The Life and Death of Elvis Presley. He presented an exciting account of Lincoln’s life and career conceived as a one-year anniversary newspaper edition of Lincoln's assassination. This program is recommended for children, ages 6 and up, and their families.
Later in the afternoon, Candace Fleming offered a Children’s Literary Café event for adults. She discussed her new double biography, The Lincolns: A Scrapbook Look at Abraham and Mary. The Children's Literary Café is a monthly gathering of adults who are fans of children's literature. Professionals, librarians, authors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers, teachers, and anyone else interested in the field are welcome to attend these meetings.
