International Newspapers at the Library
The Humanities and Social Science Library at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building houses an extensive collection of newspapers on microfilm, including more than 700 international titles. The General Research Librarians have created a research guide of the most heavily used newspapers from this collection, comprised of titles from multiple cities in over 70 countries. Although not comprehensive, this guide provides users with multiple resources both in microfilm format as well as digital versions when available.
The International Newspapers at the New York Public Library research guide is arranged into three main categories: General International Newspapers Databases (includes databases that search across newspapers from various countries), Databases and News Sources (provides specific databases arranged by continents, countries and regions), and Microfilm (which includes newspapers in microfilm format, arranged by country. Digital versions are provided when available). Some of the prominent databases include:
Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC)
The dLOC is a cooperative, multilingual, and multi-institutional digitization project of partners within the Caribbean and circum-Caribbean that provides users with open access to Caribbean cultural, historical, and research materials held in archives, libraries, and private collections. Includes the Caribbean Newspaper Digital Library, the Caribbean Map Collection, Panama and Canal Zone materials, and The Vodou Archive.
Europeana – Newspapers
Offers European cultural heritage material from over 3,700 different institutions, including newspapers articles, advertisements, and opinion pieces from over 20 countries dating from 1618 to the 1980s.
Latin American Newsstand
Latin American Newsstand provides full-text information in Spanish and Portuguese from 41 newspapers from Puerto Rico and 11 Latin American countries, including Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil.
South Asian Newspapers
This database offers online access to a few newspapers published in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka during the 19th and early 20th century. A full list of included titles can be viewed here.
Also included in the guide are catalog search terms to help you start your research, and a tab forIndexes, Directories and Catalogs, for easy browsing.
