What makes the perfect book fit for an autumnal read? Some readers might search for a title that's a little cozy, perfect alongside a mug of spiced chai. Maybe you would prefer one that explores the history of Halloween, dating back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. I personally prefer a title that makes me feel a little less alone, but not quite in the way you might expect.

When the sun starts to set a little earlier in the day and I have to start packing a cardigan for my commute, I find myself gravitating towards books that make me peek around the corner before I turn them, even if that is just in my studio apartment and the "corner" leads into a coat closet. But I'm not referring to a classic ghost story. While I also enjoy those from time to time, I'm referring to the books with a certain feeling. They're creepy, disturbing, and even worse-- they could actually happen. Well, okay. Not all of these stories could actually happen, but they're told in a way that might convince you otherwise. And what's even better than an unsettling mystery? An unsettling mystery set in New York. 

Here are nine titles that will make you feel a little more at ease about having to cancel your family vacation to New York this year.
