Help Fellow New Yorkers Out by "Returning" Digital Materials As Soon As You're Done

a person holding a cell phone

As we heed advice to stay home and practice social distancing, more and more patrons of The New York Public Library are accessing e-books and audio books with their library cards. Excellent! But even though these books are digital, the Library doesn't have unlimited access to them—they are a shared resource just like our physical books. If you find an e-book or audio book in the catalog (or through SimplyE or Overdrive) and all the available copies are "checked out," you can put a hold on it just as you would a physical book. And, conveniently, when you check one out, it is automatically returned when your lending period has concluded. If you are finished before your lending period is up, please "return" the book so that other readers (or listeners) can use it sooner.

It's easy to return an e-book or audiobook. Here's how:

SimplyE

If you're using the SimplyE app, locate the book you're ready to return under My Books, tap on the book cover to access the detail page, and then tap on the "Return" button.

Overdrive

If you're using the Overdrive app, locate your book under Loans and tap the "Return" icon. Find more info about returning Overdrive materials on Kindle, Android, Chromebooks and more here.

Libby

If you're using the Libby app, tap "Your Loans," then "Manage Loan," then "Return Early".

Cloud Library

If you're using the Cloud Library app, tap "My Books" at the bottom of your screen and tap the  red "Return" button.

Separate eBooks on Hold

During this pandemic crisis, please separate regular eBooks On Hold and Pre-Release Holds. I have one regular eBook On Hold and 8 Pre-Release eBooks On Hold. I cannot add a new eBook On Hold as the system believes I have exceeded the new limit of 3 eBooks On Hold. This new policy is Not fair to long-standing eBook patrons. Would it really cause that much havoc to your servers to segregate eBooks On Hold? I usually return eBooks that I have finished reading within 3 days upon loan. PLEASE help.

Chinese edition book

How to find the Chinese edition books at e-book. Thank you!

Hi Angela, In the SimplyE app

Hi Angela, In the SimplyE app, tap the library building icon on the upper left and chose The New York Public Library. You will see book groupings (Best Sellers, Staff Picks, etc.), keep scrolling and you will see a section of Chinese-language books. Tap on that and they are further sub-divided into fiction, non-fiction, children, etc.

I have tried downloading an ebook ("Astronomy" by Wolff and Morrison) a number of times with no success. Eventually I saw a note "You have this book on loan". I would like to return it, but haven't found any "return" button. I'm worried I would be held accoutable for the book, and also I don't wish to withhold it from others. I am not a member at NYPL, simply read an article with a link to free access during the lockdown. Thank you for you help.
