Remembering Lucas Silverio
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
And climb on every rung
May you stay
Forever young
On June 9, 2019, a fire engulfed 725 Garden Street in the Bronx, the home of my colleague Lucas Silverio, who had just finished showering after attending an event. After Lucas and his cousin helped their grandmother to safety, Lucas heroically tried to save a three-year-old neighbor. Sadly, they both passed away from their injuries.
For a brief but impactful period of time, I worked with Lucas at the Bronx Library Center, where I observed his admirable character and impeccable work ethic. Whether he was briskly pushing a book cart, eagerly heading off to assist a patron, or simply chatting about the New York Yankees with me and our guard, Barry, he always did these things with a sweet and infectious smile. I wasn't surprised when I heard that Lucas' heroic effort was done in the hope of rescuing someone.
Had Lucas lived, I'm sure he would have been the supportive backbone for his family and neighbors confronted with managing life after the fire. And, I know that Lucas would have gone on to become an exemplary physical therapist, the career he was working so hard to achieve.
Lucas was the sort of person that you only meet once in a lifetime, if you're lucky. Thankfully, I was blessed to know him and be touched by his kindness, and lucky enough to have been blessed with his friendship.
