Summer Reading 2019: A Women's Literary World Cup

Are you watching the 2019 Women’s World Cup? The tournament is in full swing with the Round of 16 starting this weekend! To keep up the international mood between matches, we have reading suggestions featuring women authors from the 24 countries competing in the Women’s World Cup. Some teams may have been eliminated this week, but our Literary World Cup teams are still going strong. All readers are welcome!

Notes on the teams: We didn't place 11 "players" on each team (as there would be on an actual soccer team), so many of your favorite writers may not be included. We invite you to nominate additional players in the comments section below! In an effort to balance out the teams, we also listed a few American and British authors under their countries of birth (e.g. Min Jin Lee is listed under South Korea and Nicole Dennis-Benn under Jamaica.)

Poetry

I met the poetry of Silvina Ocampo coincidentally on a trip to the patagonia Argentina.Alli in the library of the hotel where we were staying, while we waited for a storm to subside, we read the following poetry The recurrent dream I arrive as I arrived, lonely, scared, to the waxed wooden street door. I open the door and enter, silent, between carpets. The walls and furniture scare me with their shadows. I climb the yellow marble steps, with pink highlights. I enter a hallway. There is nobody, but there is someone hiding in the doors. The dark blinds are all open. The high ceilings in the day seem a sky with dull stars that grow. The memory retains an old rhetoric, it rises like a doric tree or column, habitually sleeps inside our dreams and we are secretly its exclusive owners. wonderful
