Job and Employment Links for the Week of June 17

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recently visited Switzerland to learn more about the country's innovative approach to apprenticeships. She notes that two-thirds of current Swiss students pursue their education through one of the 250 types of government-recognized apprenticeships.

Meanwhile, only 17 percent of U.S. students have worked in an internship or apprenticeship. Swiss apprenticeships include programs for welders and carpenters, like they do in the U.S., but Swiss students can also apprentice in the healthcare, finance, and law fields as well.

DeVos concludes that technical education demonstrates three key points: First, young people can be productive members of the workforce; second, businessses should take an active role in cultivating the next generation of talent; and, third, hands-on learning should not be seen as a last resort for those who struggle in a traditional classroom setting.  All students benefit when they have the chance to apply what they are learning in school to solve problems and accomplish practical applications in the workplace.

You can learn more about Switzerland's apprenticeships and the U.S. Department of Labor's Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion Final Report to the President of the United States by reading the U.S. Education Department's blog post, Betsy's Blog - What America Can Learn from Switzerland's  Apprenticeships.

Video stream live presentations?

Any chance of video streaming some of the job-related presentations, such as the "The Interview Head Game: Rethinking Your Role in The Interview" and all of the other job-related presentations every week. These are so useful but it is difficult for me to get to the library for these and being able to view these remotely would be quite helpful. Thank you for all of the services that the library provides!
