Tarell Alvin McCraney and Donja R. Love spoke at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture earlier this spring. McCraney is a MacArthur Fellow and the Academy Award–winning screenwriter of Moonlight. The film is based on his play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. Next year his play Choir Boy will have its Broadway premiere. Love is an award-winning Afro-Queer playwright, poet, and filmmaker whose play Sugar in Our Wounds has its world premiere in New York this summer. They discussed their works—past and future—with NYU theater professor Michael D. Dinwiddie and talked about the importance of Black joy, the legacy of queer writers, and the playwrights who have influenced their work.
