Harris  is the author of twelve critically acclaimed cookbooks documenting the foods of the African Diaspora. Kevin Young, Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, describes Dr. Harris as “one of the architects of Black food history—one is tempted to say Black food itself.” Last fall, to celebrate the launch of her memoir, My Soul Looks Back, Dr. Harris spoke spoke with chef and co-host of ABC’s The Chew, Carla Hall at the Schomburg. Harris tells stories of her youth in New York City, remembers her relationships with people like Maya Angelou and James Baldwin, and recounts some incredible eating.
