ABZÛ (Giant Squid, 2016)
ABZÛ (Gaint Squid, 2016) is a meditative adventure game from the art director of thatgamecompany’s JOURNEY (2012) and FLOW (2006), Matt Nava. Players can swim, dive, and ride on the back of a whale. The game also offers underwater puzzles to solve as well as the ability to navigate between hundreds of species of fish, while meditating at specific locations throughout the world. ABZÛ is a subtle, mesmerizing voyage beneath the sea.
CUPHEAD (StudioMDHR Entertainment, 2017) is a frantic, action platformer featuring gigantic boss battles. The game’s aesthetics draw heavily from cartoons of the 1930s, complete with hand drawn cel animations, water color backgrounds, and an original jazz soundtrack. Think of it as a brilliant combination of IKARUGA and an Ub Iwerks cartoon.
PYRE (Supergiant Games, 2017) is the latest release by the deveoper of BASTION (2011) and TRANSMITTER (2014). Its gameplay alternates between a visual novel set in a fantastic, dystopian world and a party-based action RPG closer to NBA JAM (1993). The end result is a captivating epic dealing with fate, friendship, and teamwork.
SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY (Nintendo, 2017) is a reinvention of the 3D platformer and a spiritual successor to SUPER MARIO 64 (1996). With the help of Mario’s hat Cappy, players can assume the form of dozens of enemies and objects, leading to inventive, emergent gameplay. With his brand new airship The Odyssey and more than 900 Power Moons to discover, Mario’s journey will take him from the frozen deserts of the Sand Kingdom to the surreal, urban
landscapes of New Donk City.
Pyre (Supergiant Games, 2017)
