Stonewall in Pictures

The announcement of President Obama's recent designation of the site of the June 28, 1969 Stonewall uprising as a national monument prominently featured LGBT historical materials from the Library's Manuscripts & Archives Division available online in our Digital Collections. The images in the White House's video announcement include photographs of the Stonewall after the uprising, as well as historic photographs of pioneering LGBT activists of the 1960s and 1970s. These photographs were drawn from the archives of activist photojournalists Kay Tobin LahusenDiana Davies, and Richard Wandel. Some highlights include:

Diana Davies' photo of the Stonewall Inn in 1969.

Photo Partnership for Pride Month

Hello, Hope you are doing well and staying healthy. My name is Ilana, I am writing from the advertising agency that works with the brand Adobe. We are hoping to partner with The San Francisco Chronicle for our upcoming project in celebration of Pride month this June. We noticed that you have a fantastic library of archival photos from the early days of pride parades and marches. Our hope is to bring the vibrancy of the original photos back to life by partnering with artists who will bring color into the black and white photos. We want to bring new life to these images and bring them back into the spotlight. Please let me know if you are the right person to speak with regarding this partnership or if there is someone else I should be in touch with. Thank you so much for your help and I hope to work together with you on this project. Thanks, Ilana

Images for a documentary

Good Evening: My name is Enrique Kirchman, I'm a filmmaker from Panama (Central America) and, since 2018, I've been working on a documentary about the LGBTQ+ population in our country, their struggles to achieve legal recognition for same sex marriage and their fight against a general rejection on behalf of the government and church. I wanted to make an introduction of the film with a brief review of the Stonewall riots and I was looking for some images or video and came across with your site. I was wondering who can I talk to, in order to get some copyrights to use a few pictures as part of the documentary. Thanks in advance. Enrique K.
