Booktalking "The Invisible Web" by Chris Sherman and Gary Price
We were lucky to have Gary Price present a workshop at the Library on keeping up with the latest technological developments. On some level, I knew that there were portions of the Internet that were only accessible if you know the URL. However, I was not well versed on the exact differences between the web and the Internet and exactly how search engines work before I read this book. In fact, a family member recently launched a web site for his wedding that is only accessible for users who have a user name and password. Even if other people accidentally happened upon the web site, they would not be able to gain access.
There is a hidden world buried deep in cyberspace. There is so much information on the Internet that it is impossible to access all of it with a single tool. Therefore, talk to the librarians at your local library or research library, and enjoy the resources that their expertise will lead you to! After all, librarians are experts at organizing and retrieving information.
The Invisible Web: Uncovering Information Sources Search Engines Can't See by Chris Sherman and Gary Price, 2001
This book opened my eyes to how much stuff is out there online but is not accessible to the public or crawled by search engines. This book was difficult for me to read since I am not really a "techie," but it was definitely very useful and enlightening.
