Brain Pickings @ the NYPL
I'm sure my boss wouldn't want to know how often I check Brain Pickings's 20+ daily Twitter posts but I never imagined I would actually meet Maria Popova, the "curator of interestingness." Lucky for me she's a fan of the NYPL and was more than willing to collaborate with the Library Shop on a series of "best of" lists. And so four lists were born: Wisdom on the Written Word, Furry Friends, I <3 NY, and Timeless Treats for Young Readers.
But how were we to display these lists of books other than by putting them on shelves? That's when Maria enlisted Kelli Anderson (of paper record player fame) to create 3D book sculptures made entirely out of paper! The end result is a magical landscape of books floating above the Manhattan skyline.
The window installation (10+ hours and over a month to make the books) was documented by Jacob Krupnick (director of Girl Walk//All Day) in this time-lapse video. For a closer look at the book sculptures, here is another video.
The Brain Pickings books are all available online at shop.nypl.org or in the shop at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. Mention this blog post and receive 10% off your purchase.
