Get the Facts: GED Changes in 2014
The GED® test is changing on January 1, 2014.
After January 1, scores from previous tests will be invalid and cannot be combined with any new test scores.
If you have taken the test since January 1, 2002 and want your scores to count, you must complete the series and pass the test before 2014.
If you're a New York City resident between 17-24 years old who has previously taken the GED® test and would like free assistance to complete in 2013:
- Visit GEDCompass.org
- Call 718-557-2525
- Text GED to 30644
- Email GED2013@fundforpublicadvocacy.org
There is no fee to take the GED® tests in New York State.
The GED® Tests are only given at official GED® Testing Centers approved by the New York State Education Department. There is currently no online or computer-based GED® testing.

GED Testing Service, a new for-profit entity created by the American Council on Education and Pearson, has announced it will double the cost of the exam in 2014. Since the New York State Education Department already covers the full cost of those taking the test, it is seeking an alternative standard for High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma assessment to replace the GED. The Test Assessing Secondary Completion™ (TASC™) will also launch in January 2014. More information on the new test is available at: ctb.com/tasc.
