The "Mad Men" Reading List

UPDATE:  Click here to see the Official New York Public Library and AMC Mad Men Reading List!

You might remember my original list, which will always be available here

This revised list will be easier to follow and, like my previous list, it will be updated as books appear in new episodes. Details on literary references will continue in the comments field. As mentioned in my original blog post, some of the books on the list are featured more prominently in the series than others, but all are a great way to gain insight into the episodes and the social and cultural times in which the series is set.

You might also be interested in taking a look at the Sally Draper reading list, the Glen Bishop reading list, the Mad Men Mystery Solved blog post, and my Mad Men and Sally Draper reading lists on BiblioCommons.

re: SELLING BOOKS TO MAD MEN

Over eight years ago VAGABOND BOOKS from Pasadena, Ca. got a call from a woman named Ellen. She explained that she was the prop master for a new show, MAD MEN, on AMC. For the past seven seasons, we have provided vintage hardcover and softcover books for them including: THE GODFATHER, SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE, WALL STREET JUNGLE, VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, PORNOY’S COMPLAINT , six Jewish Prayer books from 1969, Sally’s school books and Betty’s Freud paperback for college. The producers required that all the books were historically correct, tied specifically to the year portrayed in the show and in like new condition. Every year we sold them boxes of books published in the year they were filming. This arrangement led us on many fun and interesting adventures to locate books for them. For example, the opening shot for season six shows Don Draper reading a paperback copy of DANTE’S INFERNO sitting on the beach in Hawaii. The first few immortal lines of this classic were read to the viewers in a voice-over that established the motif for the entire season. Unable to locate the exact copy required for this scene through the usual channels, we finally located the as new paperback in a library bookstore in Atascadero, Ca. only a couple of days before shooting began. Naturally the books we provided had to look new. Not an easy task for popular culture books, especially the paperback titles that were made to be read and discarded. They are now 50 years old and more difficult to find that the first editions. The one collectible copy of an easily recognizable hardcover book that we provided was Thomas Pynchon’s THE CRYING OF LOT 49 in a fine dustjacket, naturally. Pete is reading it on the train. We appreciate the importance that books played in this show, which regularly reminded the large audience of viewers to read books. We are sad to see this great show end. We will miss the thrill of seeing our old books on new episodes, but happily we’ll still be able to see them on re-runs for years to come.

Missing at Least Two

Wow is this impressive! I was looking for a complete list and here it is... I am in the process of watching the series again and would like to add that the script mentions at least two books that you do not have on your list (again, they would not have screen shots attached to them, they are only mentioned in dialogue)... Paul Kinsey refers to a situation as "Darkness at Noon", novel by Arthur Koestler, and Draper is referred to at least once as "The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit", novel by Sloan Wilson. I there was a Joseph Conrad reference as well (refers to Conrad and travelling "the river") but I'm not certain if they ever specifically mentions the Heart of Darkness. Thank you, thank you, thank you to this lists creator!

Nice catches!

Thanks for reading!

Third Reich Preparation/Marketing Book Featured in Mad Men

What is the title of the Third Reich book that the Mad Men show to the clients? I recall they are making points about branding, trademarks, and long-term planning. I scanned most of the last two seasons of Mad Men, and couldn’t find it.
