Food, Glorious Food: Baking Blogs and Food Memoirs
I recently came upon a blog called The World Needs More Pie: Give a piece a chance. It is a blog dedicated to living each day to the fullest as if it were your last. The blogger, Beth Howard, used pie making to help her heal from the untimely death of her husband, Marcus. She is also writing a full length book about her choice to leave a nine to five career in favor of her passsion for baking. You can read more about her at her blog at http://the worldneedsmorepie.blogspot.com.
Which brings me to the subject of this post—food memoirs. I absolutely love food memoirs. From Ruth Reichl to Paula Deen to Julia Child, I've read almost all of them. I believe that a common denominator in all cultures is food, and books about our lives through cooking and baking keep us connected. Here is a short list of some of my favorites:
- The Gastronomy of Marriage: A Memoir of Food by Michelle Maisto
- Tender at the Bone by Ruth Reichl
- Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl
- I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti by Giulia Melucci
- Cooking With My Sisters by Adriana Trigiani
- The Lost Ravioli Recipes of Hoboken: A Search for Food and Family by Laura Schenone
- Julie & Julia: 365 days, 524 recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by Julie Powell
In addition, I adore library programs that deal with cooking and food! Listed below are two programs that involve the creative process of cooking that are coming up at the Morris Park Branch Library. One is for young adults ages 12-18 and the other is for adults 18 and over. If you are interested in attending these programs, you can do so in person at the Morris Park Branch, 985 Morris Park Avenue, Bronx, NY 10462. You can call us at 718-931-0636 or you can sign up through Facebook or on our attendit app on Facebook or on iGoogle.
The Morris Park Branch staff hopes to see you at one of these wonderful programs!
Emerald Isle Treats: It's time to snack! Join cooking wizard Jailin Acevedo as she guides you in making Irish Soda Bread and melt in your mouth toffee.
Tuesdays, April 5 & April 19 at 4pm. This program is for young adults - ages 12-18.
Create A Spring Cake Decoration: It's a Piece of Cake! A non-edible, reusable cake decoration. Join Morris Park cake artist, Celeste Berretta, in creating a spectacular cake decoration. Use it for that special spring cake you're making or simply display it in your home.
