About the St. George Library Center

The St. George Library Center of The New York Public Library was opened on June 26, 1907. The largest library on Staten Island, it was designed by Carrere and Hastings, architects of the neighboring Borough Hall and County Court House. 

Adult Reading Room

  • Discover library collections consisting of books, DVD movies, magazines and newspapers. Our main reading room features a brightly lit seating area and adult-use desktop and laptop computers. 

 

 

Children’s Room

  • The library’s upper level children’s room is home to a robust collection of material for children ages birth to 12. A dedicated family literacy space integrates reading with play for toddlers and preschoolers. Comfortable seating, as well as desktop and laptop computers are available for school aged children along with a full range of educational resources to support learning. 
  • Homework help and tutoring are available Monday through Thursday school days from 3pm to 6pm. 

 

 

Teen Room 

  • The library’s lower level Teen Room features a dynamic young adult collection housed in a dedicated space for youth ages 13 to 17. The room features seating, along with desktop and laptop computers available exclusively for teens. 
  • College and career readiness support is available daily. 
  • Drop-in film screenings, gaming tournaments, and workshops are hosted regularly each week. 

 

 

Reference Room 

  • The library’s lower level Reference Room features seating and computers in a quiet-study space used typically by telecommuters and students. 
  • The library’s Staten Island History Collection consists of over 300 research volumes of Staten Island history published beginning in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and up to present day. The collection also features the full run of the Staten Island Advance from 1921 to 2018 on microfilm. 

 

 

Tech Connect Computer Lab 

  • The Library’s TechConnect program helps adults develop confidence in their computer skills and grow more comfortable in today’s digital world. From learning the basics of how to use a computer to career-readiness technology skills, topics range from beginner to advanced level, including series-based programs for more in-depth knowledge. Adult Learning Center 

  • The Library’s Adult Learning Center helps adult students improve their communication skills in English.
    • ESOL Classes: for non-native speakers to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing.
    • Adult Basic Education Classes: for students who speak English but want to improve their reading and writing
    • English for Work Classes: for Intermediate and Advanced speakers looking for work or already employed and want a better job.
