The Craft and Art of Theatrical Orchestration

The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts presents a four-part panel discussion entitled The Sound of Broadway Music: The Craft and Art of Theatrical Orchestration, featuring major names in contemporary theatrical orchestration, arranging and musical direction. Playbill.com columnist Steven Suskin, author of The Sound of Broadway Music: A book of Orchestrators & Orchestrations, moderates.

The panels begin October 19th at 3:00 PM with “Broadway Orchestration,” featuring Sid Ramin (West Side Story, Gypsy), Jonathan Tunick (Follies, Sweeney Todd), Elliot Lawrence (Bye Bye Birdie, How to Succeed) and Larry Blank (Drowsy Chaperone, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas).

They will be joined at 6:00 PM by Harold Prince, John Kander (Cabaret, Chicago), and Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me) for the second program, “The Authors and the Creators.”

The November 2nd lineup begins at 3:00 PM with “Arrangers and Musical Directors,” featuring Paul Gemignani (Into the Woods, Crazy for You), Donald Pippin (Mame, A Chorus Line), Larry Blank (Drowsy Chaperone, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas), Bruce Pomahac (State Fair, White Christmas), and David Crane.

The final panel, at 6:00 PM, is “Theatrical Orchestration Today,” with Michael Starobin (Sunday in the Park with George, Next to Normal), Bruce Coughlin (Grey Gardens, 9 to 5), Larry Blank (Catch Me If You Can) and Daniel Troob (Beauty and the Beast, Shrek).
