The beloved artist and author shares her most autobiographical and intimate work to date.

In her new collection of illustrations, Still Life with Remorse, Maira Kalman combines personal stories with miniature essays, poems, and painted vignettes. Kalman considers family history’s role in our work, lives, and perspectives. Tracing her own story from her grandfather’s birth in Belarus to his emigration to Tel Aviv, Still Life with Remorse reflects on the complex relationship between recollection, regret, happiness, and heritage.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Maira Kalman illustrated William Strunk Jr.’s classic The Elements of Style and is the author of My Favorite Things, Principles of Uncertainty, and And the Pursuit of Happiness. She is also the author/illustrator of numerous children’s books, and her artwork has graced a dozen covers of The New Yorker. Her watches, clocks, accessories, and paperweights have been featured at the Museum of Modern Art store. She lives in New York City.

Rumaan Alam is the author of the novels Entitlement, Rich and Pretty, That Kind of Mother, and Leave the World Behind. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, Bookforum, and the New Republic, where he is a contributing editor. He studied writing at Oberlin College and lives in New York with his family.
