Taking place in late 16th century Istanbul, the novel focuses on the tradition of miniature painting during the Ottoman period, and also on the spreading influence of Italian painting. NYPL is fortunate to have a 17th century Ottoman copy of 'Shahnameh' whose stories are a recurring reference in the novel.
