Views from the Digital Collections: Coney Island
Coney Island is one of the most famous destinations in New York City for both tourists and locals alike. The Coney Island we know today was once an island off the coast of Brooklyn. In 1840, a bridge was built to connect the island to the mainland. Soon after, Ocean Avenue was paved and major railways were constructed, creating a clear path to the beach. By the end of the nineteenth century, the island was a hot spot. Grand hotels were erected, the inlet separating the island from the mainland was filled, and Coney Island became a full-on destination for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
