In this episode we dive into Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration and Ernest Hemingway'sThe Old Man and the SeaThen we interview Mrs. Cheryl Shackelton-Hawkins, a former NYPL librarian who guided us into the world of Caribbean and African American genealogy.

Cheryl Shackelton-Hawkins

During her time as an adult librarian with the New York Public Library, Cheryl Shackelton-Hawkins led and facilitated various art and tech training programs in the Bronx. Over time, her interest in genealogy—which was first sparked by her uncle—was rekindled when NYPL began conducting genealogy training programs to help patrons create their own family trees and access the library's free Ancestry.com database resource.

Cheryl's genealogical research has led her to discover a multitude of information about her family lore, Caribbean and African American genealogy, and her ties to a famous nineteenth-century polar explorer.
