Grand Central Library Events and News: March 2020

Welcome to the Grand Central Library Newsletter, a monthly showcase of news, programs, and services offered by NYPL staff and partners. Our branch in Midtown East/Turtle Bay is conveniently accessible to both local residents and metro-area commuters. 

In addition to diverse educational and cultural programming, the Grand Central Library offers computer services including free Wi-Fi and power outlets, plentiful seating for individual and group work, and collections of print and non-print media for all ages. Grand Central is also home to idNYC, located on our second floor.

Spanish Conversation Meet-up

Tuesdays, 1—2:30 PM
Are you looking to practice your Spanish language skills? 1.5 hours per week our volunteers from Nicaragua lead us to practice speaking and listening. No registration necessary. Teens welcome!

Going Digital: Library e-Resources Help

Fridays, 2—4 PM
Learn how to take advantage of free access to books, films, magazines, and more on your tablet, smartphone, or e-reader. If you have a Kindle, bring your Amazon password! If time permits, we can help you with any other tech issue you are facing.

Census 2020: U.S. Census Bureau: Recruitment Event

Monday, March 2 & 9 | 2 PM—6 PM
Grand Central Library will be hosting recruiters from the U.S. Census Bureau as they seek applicants to help make the 2020 Census a success. Join the artists from the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) to celebrate their exhibition "Grand Visions: We Are Here", on display March 1—May 29 at Grand Central library. There will also be a book presentation by Penny Coleman, author of The Vote: Women’s Fierce Fight.

Immigrant Writing Workshop with Restless Books

Thursday, March 26 | 5:30—7 PM
Through free writing classes, the Restless Books Immigrant Writing Workshop aims to help immigrant communities develop their voices. Workshops meet weekly for three, 90-minute sessions, with 15—20 students enrolled per session. Students may attend as many sessions as they choose. Attend.

Mini Meditation Retreat

Saturday, March 28 | 10:15 AM—4 PM
When the library opens at 10 AM, head to the second floor, and go all the way to the back left corner. In this unassuming room you will Settle Down with Mindfulness. Bring family/friends and let us bring Mindfulness to them, too. There will be a lunch break from 12 noon—1 PM.  We will give you instructions on how to extend your mindfulness during the break, if you want. We’ll sit together again in the afternoon, from 1—4 PM, and will have time for your questions and comments on the day. No need to register but if you have questions, feel free to email Donald Fleck. 

Kids Programs

Early Literacy: Preschool Storytime

Mondays, at 4 PM
Children ages 3—5 and their caregivers are invited to join us for an interactive storytime featuring read-alouds, songs, movement, and creative activities.

Early Literacy: Baby Storytime

Tuesdays, at 10:30 AM and 11:15 AM
A lapsit storytime for children 18 months and younger. Grow your baby's early literacy skills through reading short books, singing songs, doing rhymes, and other interactive activities. FIRST-COME-FIRST-SERVE BASIS ONLY. Participants may pick up tickets for each session at the front desk.

English Conversation for Caregivers

Thursdays, at 12:30 PM
A conversation circle for caregivers to practice and learn English together. Children of all ages are also welcome to attend for playtime.

Bookmarks & Canva!

Wednesday, March 4 | 4 PM
We'll learn the basics of graphic design and use a free website, Canva, to make bookmarks together. Kids will take home a copy of their bookmark, as well as be able to put some out for all patrons to use! Ages 8 and up. Register via email.

Book Covers & Canva!

Wednesday, March 11 | 4 PM
We'll learn the basics of graphic design and use a free website, Canva, to create new covers for books that we love. Kids will also be able to put their favorite books up on display with their new book covers! Please include your kids' favorite books so we can request them for the program. Ages 8 and up. Register via email.

Tissue Paper Collages

Wednesday, March 18 | 4 PM
Use colored tissue paper and glue on cardstock to create two-dimensional or three-dimensional collages! Ages 5-12. Register via email.

Kids' Community Mural

Wednesday, March 25 | 4 PM
Join us as we create a joint community mural on butcher paper to decorate our children's section! Register via email.

Wildlife at the Library

Friday, March 20 | 4:30 PM
Animals in the library? Join Andrew Simmons and his traveling zoo as he introduces you to a golden eagle, barn owl, Burmese and ball pythons, black throat monitor, alligator, and opossums. Learn about the fierce competitors in the wild! For 13—18 years old.
