A Look Back at New Year's Eve Through the Newly Available Daily News Archives

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

Recently, the Library added online access to the New York Daily News (1920-2009) through ProQuest’s Northeast Regional newspaper collection. This is the first time online access has been made available for the Daily News archives. Researchers can access the paper from home with a New York Public Library Card as well.

One of the great pleasures of a hometown paper is the ability to track local traditions as they change and evolve over time. One of New York City’s greatest traditions is the "Ball Drop" from One Times Square to count down to the new year on New Year’s Eve. Revelers come from all over the world to participate in the tradition (read more about the history of the ball drop, started in 1909, here).

Let’s take a look back at the ball drop in Times Square through the lens of the Daily News.
