Grand Central Library Events and News: July 2019
Welcome to the Grand Central Library Newsletter, a monthly showcase of news, programs, and services offered by NYPL staff and partners. Our branch in Midtown East/Turtle Bay is conveniently accessible to both local residents and metro-area commuters.
In addition to diverse educational and cultural programming, the Grand Central Library offers computer services including free WiFi and power outlets, plentiful seating for individual and group work, and collections of print and non-print media for all ages. Grand Central is also home to idNYC and Single Stop services, both located on our 2nd floor.

If you are at an intermediate level of Spanish, and would like to practice conversational Spanish, join our volunteer Daniela from Chile and others to practice listening and speaking, as well as meeting people and having fun!

Early Literacy: WNET Family Literacy Workshop
Friday, July 12 at 11 AM
Join Channel Thirteen, NY's Public Media, for a free workshop for early learners! This program will feature exciting hands-on activities and information for parents including: "How to make TV time into learning time"; "Using apps and mobile technology for early learning"; and "Strategies for extending learning using beloved PBS Kids characters". Includes free PBS Kids giveaways for you and your child.
Book Discussion: The Master Butcher's Singing Club by Louise Erdrich

Author Robert Chiles explores the career of New York governor and 1928 Democratic presidential nominee, Alfred E. Smith, peering into Smith’s work and uncovering a distinctive strain of American progressivism that resonated among urban, ethnic, working-class Americans in the early 20th century. 3D Printing for Adults
Tuesday, July 30, 5 PM-7:30 PM
Come learn how to design and print in 3D. We’ll be working on making a community chess set, and there will also be other surprises related to emerging technology. Register here via email.

Early Literacy: Baby Storytime
Every Tuesday in July at 11 AM
A lap-sit storytime for children 18 months and younger. Grow your baby's early literacy skills by reading short books, singing songs, doing rhymes, and participating in other interactive activities. You must register to attend.

Early Literacy: Toddler Storytime
Every Thursday in July at 11 AM
Children ages 18 months-36 months can practice early literacy skills alongside their caregivers with interactive stories, action songs, and fun fingerplays, while meeting others in the neighborhood.
English Conversation for Caregivers
Every Thursday in July at 12:30 PM
A conversation circle for caregivers to practice and learn English together. Children of all ages are also welcome to attend for a playtime.
Early Literacy: Preschool Storytime
Monday, July 1, 8, 15 and 22 at 4 PM
Children ages 3-5 and their caregivers are invited to join us for an interactive storytime featuring read-alouds, songs, movement, and creative activities.
Amazing Architecture: Towers!
Wednesday, July 3 at 4 PM
Join us for an afternoon of creative construction, and build towers and other structures based on real support structures in buildings. Register here via email.
Summer Reading: Mars Space Colony
Wednesday, July 10 at 4 PM
Design and build a model of a space settlement where families will live, work, and play. Best for ages 5 and older. Limit to 20 participants only.

Join an interactive Japanese and English storytime, where we'll enjoy books, songs, and more!
Ooey Gooey Glitter Slime!
Wednesday, July 31 at 4 PM
Join us as we craft some out-of-this world slime with glitter, colors, and cheap ingredients—meaning this craft can be reproduced at home. Feel free to bring your own reusable containers to take your slime home with you; small containers will be provided. (A note: Slime recipes vary.) The sensation of the slime in this workshop is slick, nonstick, and ooey-gooey. Completed slime can be stored in the refrigerator for continued use and play. Register here via email.

Retro Video Game Day

We'll provide those old school 8-, 16-, and 32-bit consoles, games, and controllers you all love. All you have to bring is you and your skills! Do you still have it? Come and find out!
Summer Reading: The Organic Orchestra

Presented by DJ SpazeCraft, learn how to create music collaboratively with other participants and become a beat box orchestra. For ages 13-18 years old.
