Grand Central Library Events & News: October 2018
Welcome to the Grand Central Library Newsletter, a monthly showcase of news, programs, and services offered by NYPL staff and partners. Our branch in Midtown East/Turtle Bay is conveniently accessible to both local residents and metro-area commuters.
In addition to diverse educational and cultural programming, the Grand Central Library offers computer services including free WiFi and power outlets, plentiful seating for individual and group work, and collections of print and non-print media for all ages. Grand Central is also home to idNYC and Single Stop services, both located on our 2nd floor.

Adult Events
Intermediate Spanish Conversation Circle
Tuesdays, 1 PM-2 PM | October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
Are you looking to practice your Spanish language skills? If you are at an intermediate or high-beginner level, and would like to practice conversational Spanish, this meetup is for you! One hour a week you will join others to practice self-guided Spanish conversations with subject prompts. Email LauraStein@nypl.org for more details.
Beginner French
Tuesdays, 5 PM-6 PM | October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
Through lessons and activities, you will learn basic French with a library volunteer. Space is limited, so show up early! Commitment to five classes is strongly preferred.
Next Chapter Book Club
Wednesdays at 11 AM | October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
Eight participants (21+ years old) with autism and eight staff join us for a reading-aloud book club and craft. In collaboration with Snack NYC and in this past year's Innovation Project by Chelsea Riela at New Amsterdam.
Community Conversations: Getting Older In The City
Thursdays at 1 PM | October 4, 18
Join your neighbors and community leaders in an inclusive dialogue about the issues that matter to you. As we age, city living can become more difficult and isolating. Connect. Communicate. Learn. Discuss. Participate. Repeat.

Detox Your Mind Through Meditation

Join Rosanna Jimenez, CHHC, a long-time meditator, and learn how to implement a simple yet very powerful meditation technique that can be life-changing. By detoxing our mind, we can improve our thought patterns which, in turn, will calm the mind and bring about mental wellness and inner peace.

Halloween Film Screening: Night of the Living Dead
Tuesday, October 30 at 6:30 PM
A disparate group of individuals takes refuge in an abandoned house when corpses begin to leave the graveyard in search of fresh human bodies to devour. The pragmatic Ben (Duane Jones) does his best to control the situation, but when the reanimated bodies surround the house, the other survivors begin to panic.

Early Literacy: Baby Storytime
A lap-sit storytime for children 18 months and younger. Grow your baby's early literacy skills by reading short books, singing songs, doing rhymes, and other interactive activities. You must register to attend.

Early Literacy: Toddler & Up Storytime

Children ages 18 months and older can practice early literacy skills alongside their caregivers with interactive stories, action songs, and fun finger plays, while also meeting others in the neighborhood.
R.E.A.D. with Huey

Dogs can’t read but they can be great listeners! R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs®) at Grand Central Library helps improve children’s literacy and social skills through the assistance of a trained, registered, and insured therapy dog named Huey! Open to children in grades K-4 for a 15-minute reading session. Recommended for emerging readers or those who need a boost in their reading skills. Please email allisonameduri@nypl.org to register.

The Art of Making Beats
Friday, October 26 at 4 PM
Music production remains largely a mystery. Everyone hears music, but few have a thorough understanding of how music is assembled in a studio setting. This lesson gives an introduction to how music is recorded, sequenced, mixed, and mastered using the iPad2. For ages 13-18.
