Welcome to the Grand Central Library Newsletter, a monthly showcase of news, programs, and services offered by NYPL staff and partners. Our branch in Midtown East/Turtle Bay is conveniently accessible to both local residents and metro-area commuters.

In addition to diverse educational and cultural programming, the Grand Central Library offers computer services, including free WiFi and power outlets, plentiful seating for individual and group work, and collections of print and non-print media for all ages. Grand Central is also home to idNYC and Single Stop services, both located on our 2nd floor.

Database Update: Project MUSE

From Rhonda Evans, Electronic Resources Librarian, Collections and Research Services:   
Project MUSE, providing access to over 500 peer-reviewed scholarly journals and book-length scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. has a newly redesigned website. With a scholar-informed design and enhanced technological infrastructure, the new site offers a more robust user experience for all of the scholarship on MUSE, with an elegantly intuitive interface and a suite of tools focused on the researcher. Grand Central Library kicks off its partnership with the Library for the Performing Arts with this presentation on the life and career of Martin Worman.
 

Programs in a Box : Music Makers Design Lab

Wednesdays at 10 AM, July 11 - August 1
 
In this interactive, four-part program, children in grades 1-5 will explore the mechanics behind music as they learn how percussion, string, and wind instruments, as well as the human voice, are used to produce dynamic sounds and rhythms. Get more information here.

Film Screening: Loving Vincent (2017)

Commemorating 128 years since the passing of Vincent Van Gogh, Grand Central Library is screening the 2018 Oscar-nominated biopic Loving  Vincent.

Book Club

Tuesday, July 17 at 6 PM
Join us to discuss A Passage to India by E.M. Forster, an exquisitely observed novel about the clash of cultures and the consequences of perception, set in colonial India. Among the greatest novels of the twentieth century and the basis for director David Lean’s Academy Award–winning film of the same name.

Film Screening: Lord of the Flies (1963)

Tuesday, July 24 at 6:30 PM
Join Grand Central Library for a film screening of Lord of the Flies. In the hands of the renowned experimental theater director Peter Brook, William Golding's legendary novel about the primitivism lurking beneath civilization becomes a film as raw and ragged as the lost boys at its center.

Early Literacy Baby Storytime

Tuesdays at 11 AM
A lapsit storytime for children 18 months and younger. Grow your baby's early literacy skills by reading short books, singing songs, reciting rhymes, and taking part in other interactive activities. You must register to attend.

Early Literacy Toddler Storytime

Thursdays at 11 AM
Toddlers age 18 to 36 months and their caregivers can practice early literacy skills with interactive stories, action songs, and fun finger plays, all while meeting others in the neighborhood. You must register to attend.

Puppet Fairytale Improv (A Summer Reading Program)

In this very special puppet program, the kids get to be IN the puppet show! Join Miss Nicola McEldowney, professional puppeteer, and her band of puppets as they perform everyone's favorite fairy tales! 

R.E.A.D. with Huey

Saturday, July 14 at 2 PM
Dogs can’t read but they can be great listeners! See for yourself at R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs®) at Grand Central Library! This is the first and foremost comprehensive reading to therapy dogs support program. Help to improve children’s literacy and social skills through the assistance of a trained, registered, and insured therapy dog named Huey! 

Open to children in grades K-4 for a 15-minute reading session. Recommended for emerging readers or ones who need a boost in their reading skills. Please send an email to allisonameduri@nypl.org to register.

Retro Video Game Day

July 6, 13, 20, and 27 at 3:30 PM
We'll provide those old school 8-, 16-, and 32-bit consoles, games, and controllers that you all love. All you have to bring is your skills! Do you still have it? Come and find out!

Manga Drawing Workshop

Friday, July 13 at 4 PM
Do you have the next manga series ready to pour through your fingertips? Join Misako Rocks! and learn how to draw your own characters, plot your stories, and more! All materials will be provided. For ages 13-18.
