Job and Employment Links for the Week of June 24

Modern apprenticeships have been around since the better part of the last century—for most of this time, the apprenticeship model has been specific to skilled trades. However, the model has expanded to answer the needs of today's changing economy, by including fields such as finance and professional services. Aon and other professional services firms are forging new ground between education and employment via apprenticeship programs.

The Aon Apprenticeship Program is an innovative and proven model that demonstrates apprenticeships are not only relevant, but can also help create a more diverse, high-skilled, and motivated workforce in the areas of our economy that are growing most quickly: professional services and technology.

Avon has partnered with community colleges to link associate degrees to on-the-job experience. Launched in January 2017, the Aon Apprenticeship Program gives talented students from Chicago's City Colleges the opportunity to gain experience in fields such as cybersecurity and risk mitigation. The apprentices—high school graduates, ages 18-24—receive a competitive salary, full-time benefits, on-the-job training, college tuition, and an associate's degree. Once they graduate, the apprentices are offered full-time employment and a set career path at Aon.

You can learn more about the Aon apprenticeship program from the Department of Labor blog post Inclusion and Innovation: Expanding the American Apprenticeship Model, written by Greg Case, President and CEO of Aon.

YearUp in New York also provides an internship program for high school graduates or GED recipients who are 18-24 years old and highly motivated to learn new technical and business skills. YearUp aligns job training with corporate partner needs and market trends to ensure the skills students learn are in demand. Learn valuable technical and professional skills, and gain work experience during internships at top companies. Earn a stipend throughout the program (while you train and during your internship), and complete courses eligible for college credits. For more information, call 646-341-6800.
