Kevin Young, Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and New Yorker poetry editor, recently published a new collection of poems titled Brown. His meditations on everything from the Harlem Globetrotters to the blues to Ol' Dirty Bastard and Brown v. Board of Education have been called “a parade through time” and a “necessary book of witness.”
He spoke with Claudia Rankine, professor of poetry at Yale University and the author most recently of Citizen: An American Lyric. The two discussed Young’s childhood memories, musical influences, and the pop culture that makes us dance and think at the same time.
