Grand Central Library Events & News: March 2018
Welcome to the Grand Central Library Newsletter, a monthly showcase of news, programs, and services offered by NYPL staff and partners. Our branch in Midtown East/Turtle Bay is conveniently accessible to local residents and metro area commuters alike.
In addition to diverse educational and cultural programming, Grand Central offers computer services, including free WiFi and power outlets, plentiful seating for individual and group work, and collections of print and non-print media for all ages. The Grand Central Library is also home to IDNYC and Single Stop services, each located on our 2nd floor.

Free Income Tax Preparation: Every Saturday until Tax Day 2018, volunteers from AARP will be on hand to assist you in preparing your taxes on a first come, first served basis.

My Feminist Manifesto Creative Writing Workshop: In a supportive environment, we will take part in some creative writing activities and sharing (if you’re comfortable) around the theme of feminism. Reading is fantastic, but we can add to the conversation and literature with our own ideas and opinions.

Adult/Teen Coloring : Artistic coloring for adults is the latest craze. Bring your sketchpad project or use one of our unique coloring books. All materials will be provided by Grand Central Library!

Vietnam and the 1960s: Author Sam Oglesby reads from two of his books about his time in Vietnam, reflecting on that experience with both tragic and funny events. His talk will be illustrated by gripping images of the war.

Meditation for a Healthy Lifestyle: Join Rosanna Jimenez, CHHC, a long-time practitioner of meditation, as she discusses how meditation can improve our physical, mental, and spiritual health. She will present effective methods for creating a more satisfying lifestyle including harmonious relationships and a deep sense of peace. Attendees will have a chance to practice this simple technique that can reduce stress, enhance relaxation, and promote inner growth.

Book Club - The Lost City of Z: Join us to discuss The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon, David Grann's #1 New York Times bestseller. In 1925, the legendary British explorer Percy Fawcett ventured into the Amazon jungle in search of a fabled civilization. He never returned. Over the years, countless perished trying to find evidence of his party and the place he called “The Lost City of Z.”

Film Screening - Cleo from 5 to 7: Join Grand Central Library for a Women's History Month and a screening of Agnes Varda's Cleo from 5 to 7! Agnes Varda eloquently captures Paris in the sixties with this real-time portrait of a singer (Corinne Marchand) set adrift in the city as she awaits test results of a biopsy.

Kids Programs
D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) Day: Arts and crafts promote rich social interactions that help develop language skills and social cognitive abilities, like understanding emotions. We'll set out stations of materials and let kids create some take-home fun.

Early Literacy Storytime - Toddler Time: Toddlers age 18-36 months and their caregivers can practice early literacy skills with interactive stories, action songs, and fun finger plays, all while meeting others in the neighborhood.

Kid Engineers: Playing a variety of theater and experiential learning games, and utilizing engineering toys and puzzles, kids construct a variety of projects while learning scientific concepts such as gravity, tension, compression, friction, and static electricity. For kids age 5-12. Presented by Intellectual Kids Club.

Early Literacy Storytime - Baby Lapsit: A lapsit storytime for children 18 months and younger. Grow your baby's early literacy skills through reading short books, singing songs, reciting rhymes, and taking part in other interactive activities. You must register to attend.

Early Literacy - Math Storytime: Spatial Awareness: Join us for a math-themed storytime, all focused on spatial awareness! Participate in activities focused on the topic and take home tips for you to grow this concept on your own.
