In 1978, Beatrice Andrews took the first step toward a lifelonmg career when she enrolled in an apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 613 at the age of 24. Beatrice excelled in her trade for 37 years, retiring in 2015. She said," I believe it can be very motivating for young girls to see women who have made it in career fields not normally associated with female employees. A National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site Program is recruiting talented undergraduate students residing in the NY area from (but not limited to) historically disadvantaged groups to partake in a part-time year-long program to engage in research on language(s) and benefit from workshops that will help them prepare for the next steps in their educational journey. The 14 students selected for the program will be awarded a stipend of $6,500 a year for participation in the program. Apply now.
Brooklyn Networks is a free, six-week training program that helps unemployed and underemployed individuals access career in low-voltage cabling. The course prepares graduates to obtain the industry-recognized BICSI credential, followed by work in fields like voice and data cabling, security system installation, broadcast cabling, and A/V system installation. The CUNY (Kingsborough Community College) Fatherhood Academy (CFA) is a free program designed to promote responsible parenting and economic stability for unemployed and underemployed fathers ages 18-28, through education, employment, and personal development. The program provides parenting seminars, personal and career counseling and guidance, immediate job coaching and placement in internships, MTA Metrocards, incentives, food coupons, and free college classes. Brooklyn Workforce Innovations helps jobless and working poor New Yorkers establish careers in sectors that offer good wages and opportunities for advancement. Currently, BWI offers free job training programs in four industries: commercial driving, telecommunications cable installation, TV and film production, and skilled woodworking.
CMP (formerly Chinatown Manpower Project) in lower Manhattan is now recruiting for a free training in Quickbooks, Basic Accounting, and Excel. This training is open to anyone who is receiving food stamps but no cash assistance. Class runs for eight weeks, followed by one-on-one meetings with a job developer. CMP also provides Free Home Health Aide Training for bilingual English/Cantonese speakers who are receiving food stamps but no cash assistance. Training runs Mondays through Fridays for six weeks and includes test prep and taking the HHA certification exam. Students learn about direct care techniques such as taking vital signs and assisting with personal hygiene and nutrition.
