6 Ways to Learn Without Leaving Home
As a student, my life revolves around learning, studying, and conducting research. I often do these things from home using The New York Public Library website. To get started:
- Log into your nypl.org account
(All you need is your library card and PIN number.)
- Click on the research tab
- Click on Articles & Databases
(You can access more than 800 resources!)
The articles and databases can be filtered by subject, location, audience, and language.
My favorite databases are:
EBSCO allows patrons to limit their results to “Linked Full Text” and “Peer Reviewed.” EBSCO also provides citations of the text in APA, MLA and various other formats.
JSTOR provides access to scholarly journals. It also an advanced search feature to narrow down your search.
Lynda.com is a favorite of our patrons because it allows free access to learning more about software and technology skills. Lynda.com offers patrons free Web Development classes, Music Production, 3D Animation, and Business Skills.
“Search archives and collections to find rare manuscripts, digitized pages, and more.”
“Learn a new language with this interactive database that provides step by step lesson plans for 71 different languages. This database features ESL lessons for Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Vietnamese speakers. A text translator is provided. ”
TumbleBooks Library
“Animated, talking picture books. Story books, puzzles and games, audiobooks, and books in other languages are all offered through the NYPL site.”
