Dance Broadside Collection on Exhibit in LPA Reading Room

Guest post by Emma Thursland

The Dance Broadside Collection was processed by Camille Dee and has recently been made available to the public. A new exhibit showcasing a few pieces from this collection is now located in the Library for Performing Arts third floor reading room. The collection contains over 420 broadsides from dance, theater and music presentations in cities all over the world including New York City, London, Copenhagen, Paris, and Munich, and includes such performers and choreographers as Marie Bonfanti, August Bournonville, Agnes de Mille, Fanny Elssler, Jenny Lind, Giuseppina Morlacchi, Serge Oukrainsky, Andréas Pavley, Anna Pavolova, Rita Sangalli, and Marie Taglioni. Not built to last, this large collection and its condition is very impressive.

Broadsides are printed ephemera that advertised events or performances, usually on paper or whatever material was available. The “L’Académie Royal de Musique,” which is featured in this exhibit, was printed on old wallpaper.

Broadsides varied in size and shape, and were printed in both color and black and white. Below, a performance by Carlotta Grisi in "La Tempesta" is advertised on a small print with orange ink. Contrastingly, a performance of "La Gipsy" with Fanny Elssler was printed much larger and with bold black font.
