Schomburg T Shirt ContestEnter the 2015 Schomburg Center's T-Shirt Design Contest!

Make your mark at the Schomburg! On February 9, 2015, the Schomburg Center will launch its search for the perfect t-shirt design that captures the essence of the institution. The winning design will be printed on t-shirts and other merchandise and sold in the Schomburg Shop! Be sure to visit the Schomburg and schomburgcenter.org for research and inspiration.

Guidelines

  • Artists should submit only one original Schomburg-inspired design or text.  
  • Designs will be judged on originality, creativity, artistic quality and cultural relevance.
  • Submissions should be sent in both PDF and high resolution (600 dpi) JPEG formats.
  • Submit your entry and full contact information (name, address, telephone number, and email address) to schomburgdesigncontest@nypl.org by Friday, May 1, 2015 with “Schomburg T-Shirt Contest” in the subject line

On July 1, 2015, we will showcase the top 3 designs. The third place winner will receive a 16GB iPad mini 3, the second place winner will receive a 64GB iPad mini 3, and the grand prize winner will receive a 128GB iPad mini 3 and have their design printed on Schomburg t-shirts! Each of our top 3 winners will also receive a one-year Schomburg Society Membership and have a print of their design archived in the Schomburg’s Art and Artifacts division.

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture T-shirt Design Contest begins on February 9, 2015 and ends on May 1, 2015 at 11:59:59 PM (Eastern Time). This contest is closed to Schomburg Center staff. The contest is open to artists ages 18 and over. Only one submission per person will be accepted. In the event that multiple submissions are received from one applicant, we will only consider the first submission that was received. Submissions should be Schomburg Center-inspired and not feature any inappropriate (violent, offensive, pornographic, etc.) language or graphics. Submissions will be judged by 1) originality, 2) creativity, 3) artistic quality, and 4) cultural relevance. Each criterion will be scored on a scale of 1-5 for a highest possible score of 20 points.  In the event of a tie, the committee will have a revote.

A Search Committee consisting of esteemed Schomburg staff members will meet to select their top 3 finalists, who will be notified by phone and/or email on Monday, June 1, 2015.

The third place winner will receive a 16GB iPad Mini 3 ($399), a one-year Schomburg Society Associate Membership ($35), and have their design archived in the Art and Artifacts Division. The second place winner will receive a 64GB iPad Mini 3 ($499), a one-year Schomburg Society Friend Membership ($50), and have their design archived in the Art and Artifacts Division. The grand prize winner will receive a 128GB iPad Mini 3 ($599), a one-year Schomburg Society Supporter Membership ($100), have their design archived in the Art and Artifacts Division and printed on Schomburg t-shirts and potentially other merchandise. If a finalist declines their prize, it will go to the runner up. 

We will be unable to return any physical samples, files, or artwork submitted for the contest.  Due to the potentially high number of submissions, we will only contact the finalists. All finalists will be subject to the terms and conditions of this contest as set forth in writing by the Schomburg Center.

Terms and Conditions: All applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Winners are responsible for all federal, state and local taxes. An IRS 1099 tax form will be issued to Winners of prizes valued at $600 or more. Contest is governed by the laws of the State of New York, with venue and jurisdiction in New York County, NY and all claims must be resolved in the courts located in New York County, NY. By entering, entrants/winners agree: (1) to release the Sponsor and Administrator (“Releases”) and their agents from any and all claims, injuries, liability, losses or damages of any kind, resulting, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from the awarding, delivery, acceptance, use, misuse, possession, loss or misdirection of any prize or participation in this Contest; (2) to be bound by the Official Rules; (3) that the decision of the Sponsor is final and binding on all matters relating to the Contest; (4) to the use of their names and likenesses for advertising and promotional purposes solely in connection with this contest. The winners’ access to the in-store party/event is only applicable for winners and their guests. Transportation and lodging to the T-shirt Design Event is not sponsored or included in the prize package.
