The Cooper Union's Retraining Program for Immigrant Engineers
Founded in 1987 with the Bnai Zion Foundation, a non-profit, non partisan organization dedicated to assisting those in need both in America and in Israel, The Cooper Union's Immigrant Retraining Program offers approximately 20 introductory and high technology courses designed to help immigrant engineers learn computer and business skills necessary to secure professional employment in the United States. With many newcomers struggling with a different language and a radically different work culture, the program helps bridge the cultural gap by teaching new skills and procedures germane to the American workforce. Since the program's inception, more than 70% of participants have successfully obtained full-time employment. The Immigrant Retraining Program is a vital extension of Cooper Union's 19th Century mission: to provide free educational opportunities for new Americans.
The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art is a distinguished private college of art, architecture and engineering founded in 1859 by Peter Cooper, an inventor, industrialist and philanthropist. Since its establishment, all undergraduate students have received full-tution scholarships.
Recruitment
Bnai Zion assists The Cooper Union with student selection, record keeping and career support, including job placement and tracking. Since the program is specifically designed to update professional skills, eligible applicants must have previous engineering or field related experiences. The majority of participants in the program have earned some degrees in engineering.
