On the first Wednesday of every month, the Mid-Manhattan Library hosts a monthly screening of anime. Eighteen people came to last night’s screening of Trigun at 7:00 PM. Next month on June 1st, NYPL at Nite will be screening  Gun x Sword. Last month, we met Anthony. Let’s meet another one of our loyal Anime Night patrons named Matt. He comes all the way from New Jersey to hang out and attend our monthly program. Thoughful and polite, Matt took a few minutes to answer some questions so that we can get to know him a little bit better.

Yes.

How many Anime Nights would you say you have been to? 

Seven or so.

Which title has been your favorite Anime Night at the library so far? 

Bamboo Blade.

How did you hear about the Anime Night program at the Mid-Manhattan Library?

While exploring the city last fall, I decided to check out the Mid-Manhattan Library since it was right across from the main branch. While there, I came across a flyer for Anime Night. I decided to attend so I could be exposed to titles I haven’t heard of before.

What are a few of your favorite anime titles? 

Bleach, Death Note, and Welcome to the NHK.

Do you think anime is more for boys, girls, or a combination of the two? Why do you think so?

Both. It depends on the series. Some shows are more geared towards girls, others more towards guys. Anime isn’t just for a certain group of people; there’s something for everyone!

Do you read manga, too?

I don’t read manga.

What makes you like anime so much?

I like the wide variety of stories available in the genre. It doesn't just rely on actors and sets. By animating a show, it allows for a story to reach beyond the limitation of reality, I personally prefer shows with a deep, dramatic storyline. That is something you rarely find on “regular” television. Plus, many shows have subplots that detract from the storyline to appeal to wider audiences. Watching anime allows me to get involved in a story that, most of the time, finds a way to really engage me.

Any closing thoughts?

Attending the showings has been a very enjoyable experience. It’s definitely worth the trip over from New Jersey! The “regulars” are fun to talk to and Ryan, the host, does an excellent job managing the showings.
