Mount Loretto, Staten Island, NY

General View of Mount Loretto Staten Island, N.Y., Digital ID 104622, New York Public LibraryThis picture is at Mount Loretto, which was founded as Catholic orphanage on Staten Island in the late 19th century. It is still operating today, but it is not really an orphanage anymore; it is more of a social service agency. They recently built a CYO on its grounds and it has become a community center, with inside basketball courts and meeting rooms.

The church in the picture is still standing, but the buildings on either side are gone. In the early 1970's the exterior of the church was used in a scene from the famous movie, The Godfather. There was a fire at the church shortly after the filming; only the facade was still standing. The church was rebuilt and was in operation again a few years later.

Mount Loretto is located about a mile from the Tottenville Library.

Question about my Mother

I have a question. My birth mother was a resident there. Her name was Mona Lisa Smalls. Short, dark colored, lots of black hair and pretty. She was 15 and pregnant in 1981 and gave birth to me in 1982 in Manhattan, NY. I have 3 kids now and I am 30 yrs of age. I had an open adoption. I met Mona when I was young till the age of 4 or 5. But I was a kid then so I hardly remember details that long ago. I know that I was adopted after the last visit. I used to visit her there till I was adopted. I need to know about her past. My son is sick and it is important I find her because I have medically related questions and his life depends on it.

Mona Lisa Smalls

Shaniqua Have you ever found your mother. I work at Eastern CF and I believe that I know your brother (formerly Leroy Smalls) now known as Roy Burvick. He's looking for your(his) mom as well. I checked peoplefinders.com and located a Mona Lisa Smalls in Charleston, SC. Roy's sister is conducting a search as well. You may call Roy's adoptive mother , Ms Burvick, at 718 443 4325. Also, you may reach me at 347-996-4927 Thanks Bob Wurtzel

Looking for my cousins

My cousins were put into an orphanage on Staten Island. There were 12 children in all, 4 boys and 8 girls. The last name was Roller. This was probably sometime in the 1950's. They were Charlie, Bobby, Freddy, Jimmy, Mary, Linda, Anita, Lorraine, Loretta, Carol, Janet and Delores. I'm not sure how many of them were placed there. If anyone remembers them, please leave a reply. Does anyone know what other orphanages were in existence on Staten Island in the 50's? Thanks so much for your help!

Mt Loretto - 1907

Hello- I'm trying to find my father's long lost family. My Grandfather and his sister were "half orphans" and spent time at Mt Loretto. He left there around 1907, at the age of 12 --so he could work to support his sister and bring her home, too. We don't know anything about his family, we only have Grandpa's birth certificate. My father never met any extended family and we don't know my grandfather's sister's name. I don't suppose anyone is looking for relatives of Charles Michael Walsh? It's encouraging to see that records are available, and I just e-mailed the assistant director but I'm not sure if there are records from so long ago! From the information about Mt Loretto on the internet, it must have been an amazing place!

Charles Snyder

I'm looking for any information about Charles Snyder who was at Mission of the Immaculate Virgin from 1925 to around 1942, when he joined the army. Does anyone have any info about him or his life after he left the orphanage? Crossing my fingers... Thanks!

Mom lived there from 1946-47 to 1955

The nuns broke my mom's hip because she ran away with her sister like most 13 & 10 year olds would have tried to do. Mt Loretto leaves no good memories for our family! Mom lived her most of her life in pain because of the nuns harsh treatments! Anyone had a family member there during this time? Mom's name was Anne Marie O'brien. Her brothers Tom and kevin also went to Mt Loretto. Kevin died in Vietnam on January 9th 1969 several years after leaving the MT.

Mount Loretto

Nothing but terrible memories....I was there in 1955 to. 1960....Sister Helen was the worst.

I was in Mt Loretta 1950-1953

I was in Mt Loretta 1950-1953. I ran away with two friends. The staff brought us back to Mt. Loretta and that night a nun got me out of bed and brought me into a room where there were about five other nuns. They made me take off my nightgown and told me to bend over a chair. t that point a nun who weighed almost 300 lbs. started beating with a thick hard leathered small strap that she could hold in her hand. I was shocked to see the nun that was beating me. A very jovial nun always nice when she saw you in the halls. Her name Sister I was an innocent young girl.

Grandfather

My name is Judith and I am looking for any information regarding my grandfather and his siblings who I believe were placed in St Loretta's in the early 1900s. Their father came from Chicago after his wife Bridget died with three of their children. He placed Timothy, Thomas and Mary in the orphanage on Staten Island. It believe their ages to be about 12, 11 and 9 at the time. Timothy Hushion went on to become a NYC policeman. Any help would be appreciated.

I was at Mount Loretto from

I was at Mount Loretto from 1964-1968. My brother Alex was there, too. I was housed in cottage 1 (there used to be six on the boys side). We would all walk over to Pleasant Plains on Saturdays to spend our allowance (35 cents). I liked the bus ride on Hylan Blvd. to the ferry. We were allowed to visit parents on weekends if we had any. I remember how sad it was to leave because the only friends I had were there. Oddly, those were some of the happiest days of my life.

I remember Pleasant Plains on Sat.

Hello Stephen. I'm Eric and I arrived at Mount Loretto of May, 1968 in 1st House. It was a nice, cool stroll to Pleasant Plains buying candy, chips, chewing gum - and baseball cards! I remember brothers Cucho and Johnny Arroyo. Another set of brothers were Danny and Sean Farrell along with Hector and Elmer Maldonado. Maybe you departed the Mount before I got there. Do you remember counselors Ms. Margaret? Ms. Loretta? Or Mr. Jim? Anyway, be well and stay blessed, man. Peace.

Cook named Mommy Mo

My grandmother was a cook at Mt. Loretto in the 1960's. Her name was Angelina Moseder. Most people called here Mommy Mo. Does anyone remember her, so was somewhat tall with dark hair. She passed several years ago, but I remember going to Mt. Loretto with her on her job interview.

Mt Loretto pictures

My Mom was there at Mt Loretto from age 7 to 18 starting in 1939 til 1950. Would anyone have pictures of Mt Loretto at that time, and possibly pictures of my Mom, Rose McLaughlin she was there with her younger sister Evelyn. And if anyone has any pictures of Father Kenny could you email them to me, My Mom really loved him and her picture of him is pretty old. I don't have any pictures of my Mom when she was a child. If you have any of her could you please email me them, and of Father Kenny and of Mt Loretto. Julie.

Father Kenny, etc.

Julie, My Mom would have been there about the same time as yours was. I remember her talking about Father Kenny all the time and also about Sister Jeanmarie. My mother actually named me after sister and had fond memories of her life there. Just thought I'd let you know. Jeanmarie

My Mother was in Mount Loretto.....Did anyone know her???

My mother was born in 1928 and lived at Mount Loretto from about 1931-1946....until she turned 18. Her last name was Satkowski and she went by Jennie at that time (although her given name was Francis Mary). She also had three brothers (Edward, Felix, Alexander) who were in the boys' section of the orphanage. I have never met any of them but would love to....if they are still alive. Just thought I'd give this a try. Jeanmarie

Mount Loretto

My dad, his brother and sister were at Mount Loretto from 1915 to 1922. It was an operating farm in those days and everyone had age-appropriate chores to do, along with their school work. That experience shaped my dad into a hard-working, empathetic human being. He never forgot those roots. Every Sunday, after mass, my parents and I would visit the Mount and my dad would ask kids how they did in school during the previous week. If they did well, he gave them a dime; if they did poorly, he gave them a nickel with the promise of a dime if they did well the following week. He would tell them how he grew up there and how his education and hard work got him a nice home and new car. A nickel or dime could buy a lot back then but the hope and encouragement he gave those children was priceless. Thank you Mount Loretto for shaping my dad into the wonderful man he was.

My Dad and Mom Worked at ML

I am thrilled to see the posts from so many whose lives were touched by the work of the sisters and brothers there at the orphanage. By any chance, does anyone remember a brother by the name of Henry (Enrique) Pulgar. He was my father who came to this country from S.A. Chile in the late 50's and worked at the school there. In a short time, he met my mother (Juanita Boyd) who came to work with the girls I suppose and low and behold, they fell in love. If the name rings a bell, please write me. I am in the process of writing a paper for school on my family and it would be amazing to hear from someone.

1956-1959

My name is Tony Bonviso, I was at mount Loretto from thirteen to seventeen; 1956 to Dec 24, 1959; saint Anthony's to saint John's. When I made my break through the shadows on that long ago snow cold christmass eve catching the bus on hyland blvd to the Staten island ferry and freedom of the sixties walking distance from Greenwich Village. I had a hard time at the home with lots of detention, standing for hours but far worse was the beating's, the worst from the barnells putting me in the infirmary for three days. There were the good times: 'the dances with the sweet smelling girls from saint Lizzy's like Millie Obrian, Carol Thompson , Mary jane kachik, all of which I never got up the nerve to ever actually talk to... But I can still remember my fist dance with a girl that we never hardly ever got to see aside from high holly day's across the aisle at church. The best was on a Halloween night when along with my pals Vinny Larosa, the jackson twins, Lenny and Lonie, Mike Primmano, Orlando jimaness, josepoh Delenardo, john sacarisen, and I went on a raid across the cow field up to the girls side and I got my first kiss from a girl they called Miss Holywood. During my stay there were some fantastic people like Eddie the butcher , brother Elliot, brother John, Farther Salmon and Mysenior Brown. They called me schemer and unlike many of the boy's I was able to scheme out of going to the meat grinder in vietnam where my one time good friend, Steve macqen enrolled in the homes ROTC program and was killed in action .. My racket job at trade school was as the editor for the scroll the saint Joseph first trade school newspaper; where brother John would see to it "that those rock and roll hair styles were no where in sight." My favorite times were at the beach where I was chased down off the metal light house by a coast guard helicopter and one day me and this pal of mine Gerald saved some guy from drowning; in gratitude he gave us the small dingy which we proudly carried back. I'm now seventy two year's old; Ive had an amazing (I survived it) life that I would not ever have had if it had not been for that life changing institutionalized soul scarring experience. Before MIV I was in a boys home in sparkill NY where the nun's beat us with rulers, straps, etc... It's the hardest for a little boy. Or a moma's boy who would not fight back. I remember this boy whom I thought was a nice guy and a friend and that I told how some kid had punched me in the face and then the guy I thought was a friendly nice guy punched me in the mouth saying "like this!" I pity the many kid's like me who suffered in silence in the name of Jesus and all his questionable saints. I'm sorry that whole stinking place didn't burn down to the ground

I was a Mission Kid from 1974 to 1979

I want to extend my deepest sympathies to those of you who experienced mental and physical hardships while living at Mount Loretto. Of course none of us wanted to be there, but for whatever reason, that place became our home for a while. When I was there, I was first placed at St. Elizabeth's, and like many of you, I remember Sister Helen and her mean ways. Fortunately, we were all sent to the other side, the new dorms of St. Joseph and the Davis Cottage, the experiment in independent living. I learned true compassion and empathy for other people while living there, and I owe that to my friends David and Debbie and Dorothy and Mart. They became the family I no longer had on the 'outside', and to this day, I am in contact with David and Debbie. My boyfriend Sammy Ibarra was one of the toughest kids there; I will never forget him. The counselor who was the most influential was Miss Liz; she told me get an education. I am becoming a social worker; imagine that! My best wishes for all you Mission Kids out there!

i went to school at the mount

i went to school at the mount in the late 90's wonder if anyone is on here from that time

Looking for Friends

I was raised in the Mount from 1970-1977, with my brother Eloim (JR). I played all sports and graduated from Tottenville H.S. in 77. Today I’m the man I’m because MIV give me the life experiences that to date helps me get thru life’s unexpected turns. If you remember me, please let me know how you’re doing? jmgonzalez303@aol.com

The Villa

I graduated 1962 after being there since 1st grade. All the stories are true. Anybody remember Sr. Mary Charles? I was there with Anna Rodriquez and her two sisters, Connie was one of the sisters. Their brother married a red head from my group .... Sr. Agnes Marie and Sr. Agustine were the nuns in the Villa. PeeWee Ruiz .. I remember you. Mary Jane Kachik was in my older sister's group. Anyone from my time remember Iris Pacheco? I think that was her last name. Anyone remember Steve McKuhn? He was my boyfriend who I got engaged to when I left in '62. I also remember Phyllis Wise. The rock n roll period in the 50s is what I grew up with.

Nothing But Nightmares

I was at MIV during the early 1960's. I am 65 years old now, and have spent most of my adult life reliving nightmarish memories of that place. I was in the 3rd Cottage on the boy's side. If you wet the bed, then you got a beating in the morning from the counselor or nun. If you got up and went to the bathroom in the middle of the night, then a big kid who was way too big and mature to have been housed with the rest of us (I won't mention his name or nationality - don't want to offend others), waited in the bathroom stall and pulled you in the stall with him then he sexually assaulted you. This happened to me many times. You had to pick your poison - a beating in the morning, or sexual assault during the night. Many times I went to the bathroom and saw him in the stall with another boy. I could see their feet facing each other under the door, and could hear that other little kid trying to scream in a muffled voice. I would hurry using the urinal, then run out of there as fast as I could, just glad that it wasn't me that time in the stall with that animal. I ran away once. When they brought me back, Lloyd Davis and Fr. Kenny took me into Fr. Kenny's room, pulled my pants down, then beat me mercilessly with a leather strap 3 inches by 12 inches long. It left purple welts on my backside and all down my legs. They made me wear long pants afterwards and threatened to beat me again if I ever told anyone. After Davis left the room, Fr. Kenny made me perform oral sex on him. Yes, your "sacred, can do not wrong, chain smoking dirty priest" molested me, even though I was one of his alter boys in church. Those who knew him will defend him, and those who were also his victims will be glad I had the courage to finally say something about what went on back then. I once needed $7 to attend a mandatory play at St. Peter's High School, so I went to Fr. Mangan's room and he gave me the money. I walked out of his room with the $7 in my hand and some other kids saw it. A little later, I was told to report to the gym to see Counselor Mr. Ryan. There was a nice Mr. Ryan, and also his mean brother. The mean brother is the one who I met in the gym office. He said someone stole his wallet and the other kids told him I had "a lot of money," so it had to be me (I did NOT steal his wallet). He punched me in my face and knocked me over a desk. He pummeled me endlessly trying to get me to confess. Now that I am 65 years old and he can no longer hurt me, please allow me to say it again: "I did not steal this man's wallet." I've waited all of my life to say these things. In 1965, I was sent, along with 14 other kids from MIV, to a group home in the Bronx. In 1968, I slipped out in the middle of the night and with a little money I had saved from a summer job, I took the elevated train to JFK Airport, where I bought a 1-way ticket to the farthest place away from N.Y. that I could find, San Diego, California, and never looked back. I slept on the beaches at night, and bought a loaf of bread each day to survive. I now live alone in Ohio, but I continue to remain haunted by these experiences from my childhood. To those who abused me back then, please remember the words of the late Canadian novelist Gilbert Parker - "There is no refuge from memory and remorse in this world. The spirits of our foolish deeds haunt us, with or without repentance." I cannot even imagine that there is a God who knows of these things and allows them to happen to a child. If anyone can explain this to me, I would appreciate hearing from you because I have lost all of my faith. Thank you for caring, and please don't hate me for revealing these truths, even if your experience with those who assaulted me back then were kind to you .

looking for descendents of: Charles Parisi b. 1910 1920 census he resided at Mission of Immaculate Virgin Rosina (Rose )Parisi b. 1913 1920 census she resided at above Camello Parisi v. 1916 1920 census and 1930 census he resided at above.

My Grandmother was there

According to the 1910 census, she and her youngest sister were placed there. She didn't talk about it much, but her sister became a nun. Both her parents died before 1910, but were alive in 1900. I was amazed, looking at the census, at the number of children there. She was 12 in 1910. They were children of Irish immigrants.

My name is Frank Filocamo. I

My name is Frank Filocamo. I was in Mount Loretto 72 years ago. I was there for 3-4 years, from age 3-7. I learned a lot of things at this orphanage. For example, how to make my bed at age 3, how to interact and be pleasant with people. The nuns at the orphanage were caring, and mindful of my feelings, and truly cared for my brother and I. I am planning on going to visit Mount Loretta relatively soon to rekindle my memories, and pay my respects and say thank you if I could. Feel free to contact me on behalf of any memories from Mount Loretta at cff7777@optonline.net

In Search Of Willie Martinez

I am in search of a dear friend who lived in Mount Loretto along with some of his siblings. His name was William "Willie" Martinez and I met him the summer of 1973 when we both attended Summer School at New Dorp High. He graduated from Port Richmond High School and his aspirations were to become a lawyer and he LOVED to play football. I lost contact with him in 1978. He was originally from Brooklyn. If anyone knows of his whereabouts or how to get in contact with him email me at t.fuenteslisojo@gmail.com

Mount Loretto 1959-1964

I was a transfer from St. Dominic'School orphanage to Mount Loretto in 1958. St. Dominic's had no high school. My experience at the Mount was good. No complaint. However stories about the girls side were bad.I was in Fr. Mangans dormatory. Than he went to the girls side and we got Fr. Ansaldi. Both priest were god sent. I remember my best friend Angle Mendez. We lived in the same room.{He too was a transfer from St. Dominic's.} We were like brothers. I dated my favorite girl friend,Winifred Molina. While at the Mount I was a alter boy. I became the mail man between the boys side and girls side .1964 i left with a 11th grade education. Then GED in the Army.

I was there late 1989 - 1994

Looking for anyone there around that time. I was in 10th house, St Patrick's Cottage and 8th house, St. Marks Cottage.

My stay at Mount Loretto 1959/1960-1962

I was told that I was the first child ever to arrive on my own at Mount Loretto seeking asylum. I was placed in a children’s shelter in Manhattan, until a bed became available, and I was processed into the system. Upon my arrival,I stayed in the main house for the younger children, and was eventually moved to the Villas with the older girls. Loved Sister Fidelis, who took me under her wing, and was like a mother figure to me. In the Villas I adored Sister Agnes, who became my mentor. Since I attended Tottenville High School, I didn’t get to know the other girls as I would have liked to. The only names that I can recall are Josephine (Chepa), Bernadette, Millie? and Millie Garcia. Wish I could remember some of the others...if anyone remembers me, I would love to hear from you. I am on FB as Evelyn Alvarez, my married name.

Hello, My Grandmother Anna Garland was at the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin. She was an orphan, I just want to know about her and find some answers about who put her there and why.
