Fitness: Always in Fashion
Dozens of organizations with information about free and low-cost fitness opportunities have been congregating at the libraries over the past few weeks. The reason? The 50+ Fitness Fairs. Think of them as a combined celebration of:
- beautiful mid-Spring in New York City
- Earth Day
- Physical Fitness and Sports Month
- National Bike Month
- Older Americans Month
- Celebrate Baby Boomers Month (O.K., I made that one up...)
If you missed the fairs, you have one more chance. The last of this series of fairs will take place this coming Saturday, May 16 from 12-4 P.M. at the Countee Cullen Library in Harlem. Take a look below at the websites of some of the organizations that have attended these fairs. More importantly, take advantage of the opportunities they offer for getting fit, while having fun.
The Outdoors Club sponsors member-led walks, through the five boroughs and beyond, for people of all ages and fitness levels. The club president is coming on Saturday and has generously offered to lead a hike in the neighborhood after the fair.
Shorewalkers walk around Manhattan Island in its entirety once a year and in smaller segments throughout the year. President Cy Adler has donated a copy of his book Walking Manhattan’s Rim which will be raffled off at the fair.
Bike New York offers free classes including Learn to Ride a Bicycle (for adults).
Transportation Alternatives: Reclaim New York City streets as your personal playground! Advocacy to promote bicycling and safety, special events, and information.
Wave Hill offers spectacular gardens and outdoor spaces for walking and exercising, as well as a full calendar of fun and practical events for the whole family. They even provide the low-down on backyard beekeeping and were interviewed on this topic by the Martha Stewart crew.
Saturday's program will feature presentations by representatives from groups including the Urban Park Rangers, NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation, Harlem Hospital, CENYC's Open Space Greening Program.
