Conversations from the Cullman Center: Carla Kaplan and Nell Painter

The writer and literature professor Carla Kaplan talks about her latest book, Miss Anne in Harlem: The White Women of the Black Renaissance, with the historian and artist Nell Painter.

Carla Kaplan is the author of, among other books, Zora Neale Hurston: A Life in Letters and The Erotics of Talk: Women’s Writing and Feminist Paradigms, and she has edited several works of African American literature. She is the Davis Distinguished Professor of American Literature at Northeastern University and the Founding Director of the university’s Humanities Center. She began working on Miss Anne in Harlem when she was a fellow at the Cullman Center in 2006-2007.

Nell Painter, Edwards Professor of History, Emerita, at Princeton University, is the award-winning author of several books, including The History of White People, and Sojourner Truth: A Life, A Symbol.  Currently she works as a painter, and has an exhibition at the Brooklyn Historical Society.
