NYPL Connect: Today We’re Celebrating Patience & Fortitude—Join Us!

I hope this note finds you safe and well. The Library is now in week nine of our new normal. I hope you are staying strong, and that the Library’s wide array of remote services, tools, activities, and events are providing some comfort, information, and support during this unprecedented moment.

As we move forward, I wanted to update you on two things: one, we have begun working with health and safety experts and our partners in government to create a roadmap for how and when we could reopen. We will do this carefully and thoughtfully, and will keep you informed of any developments. Two, and related, as we move forward cautiously and with public health as our top priority, we have decided to officially cancel or postpone all previously planned in-person Library events through June. It is an unfortunate but necessary step forward.

This situation is so filled with scary uncertainty, but we will get through it. It’s appropriate that today we are celebrating the birthday of our beloved lions Patience and Fortitude, who have stood guard outside the 42nd Street library for over a century as symbols of the resilience and strength of New Yorkers. With patience, with fortitude, we will get to the other side of this.

Thank you, and stay safe.

Celebrate Patience  & Fortitude

A Symbol to All New Yorkers

Gif of four historical images of marble lions outside of the Library.

The iconic lions outside of our 42nd Street library have watched over New York City since they were set upon their pedestals in May 1911. For more than a century, they have stood witness to history, while remaining steadfast symbols of all that the Library stands for: strength and inspiration available to all. Named “Patience” and “Fortitude” by New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia in the 1930s, for the qualities that New Yorkers needed to get through the Great Depression, our lions are as important as ever for our city today. As we celebrate The New York Public Library’s 125th anniversary this year, check out all the ways you can join the festivities in honor of our beloved lions—from a historic slideshow to fun facts, free downloads, and more.
